Ba1b - Sculpture.

This sculpture workshop was a follow on from the initial workshops we had exploring COPY, EDIT, OBJECT and HYBRID. The workshop allowed us to explore different types of casting including Relief castingTo create a sculpture in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane. And also Low, Metso and Alto casting.

I chose sculpture (object) as it offered me the chance to use materials that I had never had the opportunity to use, the aim of the workshop was to introduce us to the fundamentals of the casting processes whereby a void or space becomes occupied by another material to form a solid cast. Within most instances within casting it involves applying a liquid into a mould (a 'negative' space) which sets to form the cast (a 'positive') of that space.

Week 1 - Clay & Plaster

We were introduced to making a basic open mould by carving a manipulating clay by using carving tools and other objects to create a 'low relief' sculpture. We built walls around the mould to create the 'negative space' in which the wet plaster could be poured into. The sculpted clay was directly registered onto the plaster creating the cast. With the casts we were challenged to outline these words - Originality / Repetition / Edition / Impression / Forming / Modelling.

Week 2 - Mould-making

With the plaster ' positive' created in week 1 we also made impressions into oil sand with our plaster casts which would be the stable for aluminium to be poured into creating an alternative version of the original plaster casts. We also experimented with other mediums such as latex and plastic form which offered different qualities to the plaster cast.
