This is the 'positive' from the first plaster cast. For this cast I tried to explore abstract form by creating raised features to do this i had to carve away into the clay using a variety of carving tools. The parts of the sculpture which look as though they have been dug out were created by building up on the clay block. As the plaster is poured into the mould the features created in the clay become the opposite, anything raised on the clay becomes cut into the plaster and anything cut into the clay becomes raised onto the plaster.
When creating the form onto the clay i didn't follow a design i just worked directly onto the clay carving and manipulating the material in different ways. The end result is an abstract sculpture that reminded me of urban and rural landscapes in a way, the high rise buildings of the urban city contrasting with the gentle rolling hills and valleys within rural environments.
